The White Horse & Griffin in Whitby, North Yorkshire
One of the most recognizable and alluring buildings on Whitby’s historic East side is the White Horse & Griffin Hotel and Restaurant, which brilliantly encapsulates the history, ambiance, and character of this adored seaside community.
The White Horse & Griffin, which was first built in 1681, served as a meeting place for explorers Captain James Cook and William Scoresby, who hired and fixed their men from the structure. It also served as the first coaching inn from Whitby to York and London. The White Horse and Griffin is the ideal starting point from which to explore the town, the adjacent Moors, and Whitby’s ancient east side.
With the help of a wide range of Whitby’s suppliers, Head Chef Michael Coates and his staff produce excellent meals in a casual, uncomplicated setting. The inn includes two dining rooms: a more formal dining room upstairs for bigger groups or special occasions, and a more informal bistro below that matches the kind of food Andrew makes for his visitors.
See the splendor of 13th-century gothic architecture as you explore the Whitby Abbey ruins, one of North Yorkshire’s most famous and recognizable landmarks. Discover centuries of history, breathtaking views, and a jam-packed events calendar just a short hike from Whitby’s charming center.
The Whitby Coastal Cruises are a fantastic way to view Whitby from a perspective you’ve never had before. Or, take the well-liked evening sunset cruise and watch as the sun sets into the rolling waves of the sea, turning the sky into a canvas of beautiful orange and red. Both trips include an hour ashore to explore the quaint fishing village of Staithes on the Yorkshire coast. You can also embark on a whale-watching excursion in the North Sea in the hopes of spotting humpback whales, dolphins, and seals.
