The Inn at Whitewell, Forest of Bowland, Lancashire

The Bowman family owns and operates the inn; Charles Bowman is the third generation to get involved with the inn’s development. The old structure was largely restored by his father Richard, a former Lancashire cricketer and brewer.

On the inn’s seven-mile stretch of the river, guests are welcome to fish for salmon, brown/sea trout, and grayling, depending on the season. The surrounding countryside can also be explored on foot, by bicycle, or by horseback; guests planning a day trip can request picnic hampers and lunches.

Although it is pretentiously titled the Orangery, The Inn at Whitewell’s exquisite private dining room on the riverside is more of a testament to the vistas and food than to horticultural endeavors.

Bowland Forest Vintners is a completely independent wine retailer, free to purchase wine from any winemaker in the world and independent of any major wholesaler or producer. The store, which is located in the inn’s lobby, favors smaller producers whose wines are focused on quality and always come from a single vineyard.
