Casa Weiss – A fairytale house revived in the heart of the Trascau Mountains

Casa Weiss was built in 1910 on the main Upper Street house rows of Rimetea (formerly Torocko) village, a prosperous iron mining and smelting town and a crucial metallurgical center during the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Following the Austro-Hungarian Compromise, the economy shifted from mining towards a bourgeoisie structure.

Casa Weiss is one of the buildings that received the “Europa Nostra” award of the European Commission in 1999.

In 2000 the Upper Street of Rimetea, including Casa Weiss, was declared a protected architectural area by the National Office of Historical Monuments.

Rimetea was also nominated for the UNESCO World Heritage List.

The renovation of the building to its current state began in 2023 aiming to restore and remodel it as a guesthouse with a bistro. The work lasted over a year and involved numerous teams of workers, technicians and an architect experienced in restoring historical buildings. The restoration process provided rich insight into local house-building techniques, showcasing the community’s skill in utilizing available natural resources to their advantage.

Special attention was paid to the doors and windows, an iconic feature, which were meticulously recreated according to the original design, featuring three glass panes with laminated wood and manually carved details.

This house has endured for many years and its passage through time is expressed through the arrangement of the four accommodation spaces resulting from the restoration, with each room reflecting the characteristics of a specific era: 1910, 1950, 1980 and contemporary. These experiences are designed to be comfortable; even when “traveling” back to 1910, the room whose furniture was handcrafted from thick wooden beams, guests will enjoy a restful sleep and premium amenities.
